There are three Physician pathways that are offered:
Physician in the Intramural program (Clinical):
Responsible to conduct research on the NIH campus to treat medical conditions that are exceptionally difficult to diagnose and includes patient care components.
A Medical license is required.
Physician in the Extramural program (Clinical):
Responsible for research conducted by other organizations and funded in part by NIH grant money.
Portfolio will include clinical human trials or clinical days.
Uses medical expertise to administer extramural research grants or contracts, evaluate activities of funded investigators, and make recommendations on the contribution of research to the program's goals and objectives.
A Medical license is required.
Physician in the Extramural program (Research):
Responsible for research conducted by other organizations and funded in part by NIH grant money.
This position is not involved with patient care.
In this position, the physician uses medical expertise to administer extramural research grants or contracts, evaluate activities of funded investigators, and make recommendations on the contribution of research to the program's goals and objectives.
A Medical license is not required.
Requirements:
To be a Physician at NIH you must have either a MD or DO degree from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation.
A current medical license is required for the Clinical Physicians in the Intramural and Extramural programs.
